California Physical Fitness Test |
Description: The California Physical Fitness Test is a statewide student physical fitness test directed by AB 265 in 1995 to be administered at least once every two years. The State Board of Education designated the Fitnessgram as the required physical performance test to be administered to California students. Population tested: California 5th, 7th and 9th graders. Although the test is mandated, the extent of testing has been affected by logistical and fiscal issues. Approximately 46% and 70% of California students were tested in 1997 and 1999, respectively.

| California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) |
Description: CHKS is a tool sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE), in order to provide school districts with an instrument to assess an array of health indicators related to academic success. Survey questions are drawn primarily from the national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (see YRBS under National Surveys) and the California Student Substance Use Survey. Since 1999, the YRBS is administered in California as the CHKS.
Population surveyed in 1999-2000: 12,800 randomly selected California 7th, 9th & 11th graders in school districts that agreed to administer the survey.The results of this survey are not representative of California as it is only administered selectively at the discretion of individual school districts. San Bernardino and San Francisco Unified School Districts have published CHKS results.
Used to assess:
- use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs
- violence, school safety, gang involvement, and delinquency
- nutrition and physical activity
- sexual behavior
- exposure to prevention and intervention activities
- risk and resiliency (protective) factors

| California Children’s Healthy Eating & Exercise Practices Survey, 1999 (CalCHEEPS) |
Description: CalCHEEPS was conducted from April 21 to June 28, 1999, by Fleishman-Hilliard Research and the Public Health Institute and was funded by the USDA and the California Endowment. Eight hundred fourteen 9-11 year-old California children were assisted by their parents in keeping a 2-day food and physical activity diary. A sub-sample of 394 children were surveyed by phone on their knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about healthy eating and physical activity.
Population surveyed: 814 California children (age 9-11), living in stable, English-speaking households, whose parents were willing to have their children participate; the sample was therefore not representative of all California children.
Used to assess:
- Types and number of servings of 9 food groups
- Physical activity levels (time and intensity)
- Knowledge, attitudes, beliefs about physical activity and nutrition
- Exposure to nutrition messages
- School meal participation

| California Dietary Practices Survey (CDPS) |
Description:The largest dietary survey yet conducted in California, The California Dietary Practices Survey (CDPS) has been conducted using telephone surveys every other year since 1989. This survey tracks the dietary and physical activity habits and patterns of Californians.
Population surveyed: California residents age 18 years or older

| California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) |
Description: The California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) is the largest state health survey conducted to date in the United States, collecting information from every county in California. The survey focuses on public health and access to health care. Interviewing began in November 2000, with completion scheduled for summer 2001. CHIS is a collaborative effort between the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, the California Department of Health Services, and the Public Health Institute.
Population surveyed: 55,000 households in households throughout California, selected by random digit dialing: parents of young children (<12), adolescents (12-17), and adults (18+)
Used to assess and monitor:
- physical and mental health status
- prevalence and management of chronic conditions, such as diabetes, asthma, cancer and high blood pressure
- diet and exercise habits of food insecurity

| California High School Fast Food Survey, 2000 |
Description: In 2000, the Public Health Institute and Samuels & Associates conducted this survey of California district level food service directors in order to assess the prevalence of fast foods and access to healthy foods on California high school campuses.
Population surveyed: 171 California school disctricts representing 345 high schools
The study describes:
- Types of fast foods being sold on California high school campuses
- Factors that influence fast food sales
- Economic and policy issues associated with these sales

| California Research Bureau (CRB) Children’s Healthy Lifestyle Report |
This report is based on focus groups conducted within communities throughout California by the California Research Bureau (CRB). Population studied: 19 focus groups of children and parents in ethnically diverse communities in California
Identified and described:
- underlying factors related to overweight among children and adolescents
- effects of overweight and obesity on child and adolescent health health care costs
- policy options that suggest actions that the Legislature, schools, communities, and families might take
- an extensive bibliography

| California School Food Finance Study, 2000 |
Description: In 2000, the California Food Policy Advocates (CFPA) commissioned Samuels and Associates to conduct a study of food service finances in order to describe the financial management of public school food service departments.Population surveyed: District level food service administrators and business officials at 10 California school disrictsThe study examined:
- sources of district food service funds
- how the funds were used
- who in the district has decision-making authority and fiscal responsibility for the food service
- factors that impact the types of foods sold
- what it would take to meet the American School Food Service Association’s standards for producing quality meals, if the district was not currently doing so

| California Teen Eating, Exercise and Nutrition Survey, 1998 (CALTEENS) |
Description: CalTEENS (1998) was a project of the California Department of Health Services (DHS), Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section (CPNS) and administered by the Public Health Institute. This project was designed to investigate the behaviors and attitudes of California youth regarding healthy eating and physical activity.
Population surveyed: Representative sample (n=1,213) english- and spanish-speaking California youth ages 12 to 17, selected by random digit dialing.
This survey was used to estimate:
- daily number of servings of specific categories of foods
- awareness of the recommended number of servings of these foods
- motivations for and barriers to eating fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods
- minutes of physical activity
- motivations for and barriers to physical activity
- participation in school and extracurricular physical activity
- other knowledge, attitudes and behaviors about physical activity

| Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System (PedNSS) in California |
Purpose: The purpose of PedNSS is to monitor simple key indicators of nutritional status (weight, height, hematology) among low income, high-risk infants, children and adolescents who participate in publicly funded health programs. In California the data source is collected from the Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP) Program screening appointments.
Conducted: Nationwide it has been conducted continuously since 1973. In California, participation in PedNSS began in 1988.
Target Population: Low income, high-risk children, birth through 19 years of age, with emphasis on birth through 5 years of age.
