In recognition of a $10 million pledge by the Dr. Robert C. and Veronica Atkins Foundation, we've changed our name. We are now the Dr. Robert C. and Veronica Atkins Center for Weight and Health.
The Center itself has not changed -- our investigators, our research projects, and our commitment to rigorous scientific evaluation of community-based obesity prevention programs all remain the same. The pledged funds from the Atkins Foundation will allow us to continue our focus on finding practical applications to obesity prevention well into the future.
The Atkins Foundation was established in 2003 following the death of Dr. Robert C. Atkins. It funds independent, evidence-based research, educational programs, public health advocacy initiatives and endowed professorships, and it is unaffiliated with Atkins Nutritionals, Inc., and unrelated to the well-known diet bearing the Atkins name. The Atkins Foundation is governed by a board of directors under the stewardship of the National Philanthropic Trust, an independent public charity that manages more than $500 million in charitable assets.
The Foundation's web site may be viewed at http://www.atkinsfoundation.org/default.asp
