Thinking About the Future
I can't believe it's my last semester here at Cal. It seems like just yesterday I was walking onto campus, not even being able to find Dwinelle. I've thought a lot about what I wanted to do after graduation, and after considering many options, I decided to apply to, and was thankfully accepted to Teach for America. Even though it seems early, for us seniors, now is an important time to start thinking about what we will do after we get our degree.
I will be teaching high school biology in the Mississippi Delta. I'm really going to miss the Bay Area, but I'm very excited to live in a place that I've never been before. I'm so excited to be a part of a movement to eradicate the opportunity gaps for access to good education that exists in America. I found this opportunity by going to the career center website. I looked through the job listings on Calisto, and I ended up applying to the ones that interested me. The career center is an amazing resource for people who are trying to see what they want to do after graduation. In addition, your advisors are good resources. For example, my advisor Susan knows a ton about different routes people have taken after graduation. I also attended some alumni events to meet up with alumni to hear about what they were doing now. I think what ever field you are going into or you are thinking about going into, the best thing to do is to talk to someone who has done that/is doing that. I talked to many Teach for America alumni, and that was how I was able to make the decision to join the corps. Whether it's teaching, investment banking, grad school, or working for a non-profit, there are variety of options for us as graduates of CNR, so even if you're not sure yet, the opportunities are there if you look in the right places.
