Child diets don't fight obesity

Dieting, particularly in adolescence, can be counterproductive.

One expert, Joanne Ikeda, found that out when she surveyed adult women about their dieting habits in a study published in 2004 in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. She asked 149 obese women if they had dieted and if so, how many times and when.

Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program wraps up 6th annual summer course

On July 15, the Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program wrapped up its sixth annual summer course.

The course is an intensive, hands-on summer training program at UC Berkeley that brings 40 mid-career environmental leaders from developed and developing nations together for workshops on topics including environmental management and policy; clean energy options; leadership for sustainable development; population, poverty and the environment; and conflict management.

Bushmeat: Illegally hunted animals turn up in Western markets

Baboons, duiker antelopes and cane rats are available by the pound in markets in major cities in North America and Europe, reports ESPM professor Justin Brashares.

While the meat showing up in cities from New York to London represent just a sliver of the illegal bushmeat trade, it highlights the strong demand that still exists for illegally hunted meat, the ecologist says.

Bushmeat (wild animals hunted for food) can be problematic when the animals killed are endangered or carrying disease. Most concern about bushmeat centres on western and central Africa, where great apes are among the animals eaten, and where it represents a serious threat to many animal populations.
