summer course
berkeley ELP alumni network

"The most precious thing that came out of this summer session was the links established with colleagues all over the world with the same passion for saving the world from environmental disaster. What is quite wonderful is that the links are more than just professional, they are personal and full of warmth, camaraderie, and sinicerity of friendship."
Agnes Rola, Philippines

" It has been very busy here in Bangkok. Several side events, parallel sessions in addition to plenaries. Our Beahrs ELP reunion was therefore
more of a floating market innovation and successful telephonically, by
e-mail and bilateral discussions.  I managed to touch base with 5 ELP
alumni. The basis for our interaction was to exchange experiences since
ELP at UC-Berkeley and discuss the role of our participation at
the World Conservation Congress in Bangkok"
Patrick Karani, Kenya

"The best part of the IUCN Bangkok Conference was meeting Beahrs ELP alums. We couldn't manage to have a get-together due to our tight schedules, but met in small informal groups. Met Patrick Karani, Tom Outlaw, Nani Saptriani, and Joseph Adelegan. Resource persons from the Beahrs ELP course Mathis Wackernagel of Ecological Footprint and John O. Niles were there too." --Purabi Bose, 2004

ABOUT THE BERKELEY ELP
ALUMNI NETWORK

The Berkeley ELP Alumni Network was established on July 25, 2001 by the inaugural summer course participants. As of August 2004, it has 150 members from over forty countries. The Network ensures on-going communication among alums via email listserves, collectively produced newsletters, reunions around the world, and occasional Cyberspace Discussions.

The Network also fosters collaborative learning and exchange opportunities between alumni, their institutions, the University of California , Berkeley and other resource persons in the Bay Area. The Small Grants Initiative provides seed money to support alumni-initiated conservation and sustainable development projects carried out collaboratively with UC Berkeley partners.

A Steering Committee of Beahrs ELP alums manages the Alumni Network, together with a part-time coordinator at U.C. Berkeley. The Steering Committee consists of representatives from the major geographic areas of the world:

  • Americas
  • East & Southern Africa
  • West Africa
  • Europe
  • North Africa / Middle East
  • Russia & CIS
  • South Asia
  • Southeast & East Asia, Oceania

A number of Beahrs ELP alumni have shown interest to create ELP training and research centers in their own countries and regions as a means to greatly expand the outreach and impact of the course learning, adapted to local priorities and contexts. There are on-going discussions to establish ELP Regional Centers in Russia/CIS with St. Petersburg St. University (see Spring 2004 newsletter), in the Philippines with SEARCA, and in South Africa with CEAD, University of Natal.
